Where to Celebrate the New Year on the Big Island

New Year’s Eve means a lot of different things. It can be a fresh slate for new beginnings, a time to set new resolutions, or just a good excuse to kiss your significant other when the clock strikes midnight. In Hawaii, it mostly means it’s time to celebrate! If you really want to celebrate the New Year like the Hawaiians do, here are the places to be on the Big Island.

Hilton Waikoloa Village

The Hilton Waikoloa Village is one of the Big Island’s premiere resorts. It’s nestled on the northwestern coast of the Island, just north of Kona. Every year, they throw a big New Year’s luau to celebrate the turning of the calendar.

This year, they’re going to have live music, storytelling about the legends and history of Hawaii, plenty of hula and fire dancing performances, and, of course, delicious food. As if that’s not good enough, you’ll also get a welcome Mai Tai the minute you arrive, along with unlimited drinks throughout the celebration! It’s definitely not something you’ll want to miss.

Fairmont Orchid

The Fairmont Orchid is another high-end luxury resort on the northwestern side of the Big Island. Like the Hilton Waikoloa Village, they too put on a New Year’s luau filled with delicious food, hula performances, and live music.

On New Year’s Eve, the Fairmont’s luau runs special late hours from 8 to 10pm, so you can dine under the stars. Once the luau festivities are over, you can head to your favorite beach or sit out on your lanai and watch the dozens of fireworks shows locals love to put on every year.

Mauna Lani

If you’re looking for a more indulgent New Year experience, the Mauna Lani offers a special New Year’s luau to help Islanders ring in 2022. You can enjoy an incredible seven-course dinner while you listen to live music and watch hula dancing.

The event is finished with a New Year’s party, complete with fireworks over the unbeatable Hawaiian coastline. There’s no better way to ring in the New Year than on a beach, sipping a tropical drink, and watching fireworks over the ocean.

Anywhere

You don’t have to go to a fancy resort to celebrate the New Year on the Big Island. Many local communities throw New Year’s parties of their own. If you live or are staying in a community, check with the front desk to see what’s going on!

Many of the locals also put on their own fireworks shows (some more illegal than others). All you really need to do to ring in the New Year is to pour yourself a drink, put on your best comfy attire, and sit on your lanai to enjoy the show. If you really want to catch breathtaking views, head up one of the mountains and watch as the entire Island celebrates the New Year with dozens of fireworks going off all over the Big Island.
