Kona’s Favorite Snack Attack Spots

Surfing, swimming, golfing, hiking… If you enjoy an active life, the Big Island is the place to be. But here in Hawaii, we also know a thing or two about tasty treats.

So when all that activity makes you hungry, refuel at one of Kona’s favorite snack attack spots.

Gecko Girlz

Shave ice is a staple of the Hawaiian snack scene. And for good reason. Fine, fluffy, and full of flavor, shave ice will cool you down when the tropical weather gets to be too much.

There’s no shortage of shave ice shacks on the Big Island. But when it comes to Kona, you have to grab one from Gecko Girlz

Gecko Girlz has 25 years of sweet treat expertise, serving shaved ice since 1997.

Their shave ice is 100% made in Hawaii, using homemade recipes for a truly authentic snack. No corn syrup. Just pure cane sugar and locally sourced ingredients.

You can even build your own shave ice. Choose from natural flavors like Molokai Pineapple or Nuuanu Lychee. Then go crazy with delectable toppings.

Or keep it classic with a Kona Sunset. Featuring vanilla cream ice cream, waialua lilikoi & lychee syrups, lilikoi purée, coconut cream snow cap, and some mochi for good measure… let’s just say this is a treat you won’t want to miss.

Broke Da Mouth Grindz

“Broke da mouth” is a Hawaiian pidgin term used to describe food that is unbelievably delicious.

Merging the best of Hawaiian and Filipino savory snacks, the menu at Broke Da Mouth Grindz features mouthwatering comfort foods – all of which live up to the restaurant’s name.

The flavors here are the stuff of local legend, featured on Guy Fieri’s Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives. I know, I know… every food snob has an opinion about the mayor of Flavortown. But he is kind of an expert when it comes to snack time.

Garlic Furikake Chicken Fries? What more do you need after splashing around in the surf?

Once you’re ready to trade board shorts for shirt and tie, check out these must-try restaurants of Kona for some fine dining options.

Herbivores Vegan Cafe

Healthy fast food sounds too good to be true, but Herbivores Vegan Cafe gives Kona just that.

Owned by a mother-daughter team, Herbivores has served up tasty snacks and good vibes since 2012.

Who said vegans can’t have any fun? The menu at Herbivores is a snack lover’s dream: jackfruit nachos, vegan chili dogs and pizzas. And if you’re so determined to keep it healthy, grab an all-natural dragon fruit smoothie.

Local tip: catch live music from local bands at Herbivores on Friday and Saturday evenings.
