Perks of Living on the Big Island of Hawaii

Vacationing in Hawaii is like eating one potato chip: It tastes great, but there’s so much left in the bag! You can’t experience everything that Hawaii has to offer with just one visit. Living on the Big Island is filled with adventure, leisure, and relaxation. It’s truly the perfect tropical paradise to call home. Here are some of the perks of being a permanent Big Island resident.

Outdoor Lovers’ Paradise (Literally)

A weeklong trip to Hawaii is hardly time to see everything the Islands have to offer. Heck, a yearlong trip wouldn’t even cover it. Hawaii, especially the Big Island, is filled to the brim with exciting, unique outdoor adventures. Only people who live in Hawaii have even the slightest chance to scratch the surface of all the fun things you can do.

The Big Island alone has all but four of the world’s climate zones. You can wear a winter jacket on the peak of the tallest mountain in the world (not highest) in the morning and swim in the warm ocean that same afternoon. Visit the rainforest for lunch and enjoy dinner in a desert. You’ll never run out of things to do.

Don’t Worry About Traffic

Can’t stand being stuck in traffic? You won’t have to on the Big Island! You’ll hardly ever find a traffic jam anywhere. Even in the major “cities” like Kona and Hilo, there are only a few stoplights between you and your destination. You might get stuck in traffic on some of the other islands like Oahu, but on the Big Island, driving is as easy as island life itself. Plus, even if you do get stuck behind someone going 15 under the speed limit, the scenery is so beautiful you’ll forget all about it.

Even if you have a terrible sense of direction, it’s easy to navigate the Big Island. There are only a few “major” highways, and one is a loop that goes around the entire island. Just hop on and drive until you see your destination.

Hawaiian Culture

Have you ever heard of Southern Hospitality? Well, Hawaii is the southernmost state in the U.S., and it shows. Hawaiian culture is one of the most inclusive cultures in the world. Island living is all about enjoying life, relaxing, and taking it easy. Even people who come from the heart of bustling New York City can’t help but slow down and embrace island living.

The Weather

Yes, vacationers can enjoy the Hawaiian weather too, but long after their trip is over, the perfect weather persists. Wouldn’t it be great to live in a place where it’s always sunny, temperatures are warm, and there’s never any snow in the forecast?

Of course, the weather does change as you move around the island, but that’s just another benefit. You can choose the weather you want! If you’re someone who enjoys occasional rain, or even a lot of rain (yes, those people exist), live on the Hilo side of the Island. For those who prefer dry, warm weather, head to the Kona side.

Time to Relax

Because there’s so much to do on the Big Island, vacations can be filled with stressful plans and overly detailed itineraries (ask me about the first time my kids came to the Big Island). With all that running around, you don’t have time to enjoy the best part of Hawaii: the relaxation.

Only locals truly have the time to enjoy the Islands the way they’re meant to be enjoyed. Want to see the top of Mauna Kea but don’t feel like making the trip that day? No worries, head to the beach and try again tomorrow. That’s the beauty of being a resident of the Big Island. Live life on island time.
